DESCRIPTION:Award-winning film producer Spike Lee will speak at The Rose Theatre at The University of Memphis on Tuesday\, Feb. 23\, at 7:00 p.m. \nAn Atlanta\, Georgia\, native\, Lee is best-known for his box office hits Do the Right Thing\, Malcolm X and School Daze. He attended Morehouse College and later received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from New York University’s Tisch School of Arts in Manhattan. Lee’s\, debut film\, She’s Gotta Have It\, secured him the Prix de Jeunesse Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986. In the years to follow\, Lee would receive two Academy Award nominations for his drama Malcolm X\, starring Denzel Washington\, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film for his film\, Do the Right Thing. Many of Lee’s film showcase socio-political critiques that challenge cultural assumptions about class\, gender\, and race. Lee’s recent work includes documentaries such as Academy Award-nominated 4 Little Girls\, and Primetime Emmy-winning\, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Lee’s production company 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks has produced more than 35 films since 1983.\nThis event will take place Feb. 23 in the Rose Theatre for the Performing Arts (University of Memphis). Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:00 p.m. \nThis event is sponsored by University of Memphis and  The Student Event Allocation Committee.

The event will feature live music from the Garry Goin Band\, Marcella and Her Lovers and a special set from the Stax Music Academy. \nThis year\, for the first time\, the Soulsville Foundation is partnering with local hotspot\, the Rec Room\, located in the booming Broad Avenue area\, creating the “Rec Room South” in the Stax Music Academy building during the event. \nAfter being inspired by the Stax Records legacy and encouraged by the Soulsville Foundation’s work with at-risk young people\, former Grizzlies players Shane Battier and Brian Cardinal and their wives offered to host a fundraiser in 2005\, which became Staxtacular. Since then\, new Grizzlies players have taken on the host roles and Staxtacular has become one of the most popular fundraising events of the year in Memphis. You never knew who would stop in and do a guest spot. And you never really knew when you were going to hit the stage\, because the list meant absolutely nothing to Earthquake.” \nHe has 2 shows Friday & Saturday. The first show starts at 7:30PM followed by a 10:00PM show.
